Review: The Podcast Show London 2024

Transcript
Speaker:

Hello, podcasting person.

2

:

I hope you're doing well.

3

:

I just been to the

podcast show London:

4

:

The podcast show London describes

itself as the biggest international

5

:

festival for the business of podcasting.

6

:

350 plus world-class speakers,

130 plus panels and sessions.

7

:

Global industry brands,

networking and a whole host more.

8

:

So why did I go well, I've been editing

and treating audio for a couple of

9

:

podcasts clients for a while now.

10

:

So I feel like networking within

the industry would be a good idea.

11

:

I also wanted to collect soundbites

from visitors and exhibitors for

12

:

a bonus episode of podcasting

people links in the show notes.

13

:

I wanted to see people in

person through the podcast.

14

:

I've been lucky enough to get to

know a few people in the industry.

15

:

And there's nothing like in real

life to get to know people better.

16

:

I also wants to have chats with

fellow independent creators.

17

:

So the creative village, the

addition of the creative village

18

:

this year was a welcome one.

19

:

Well-placed as soon as you walked through

the entrance, it included the creator

20

:

stage with loads of talks and a creator

advice lab, where you could register for

21

:

advice and be matched with an expert.

22

:

That genius bar idea was something I

called for in a guest blog interview

23

:

I did for, We Edit

Podcasts a few weeks ago.

24

:

Uh, that link is also in the show

notes for you to have a read.

25

:

If you like.

26

:

Uh, so I'm delighted that the podcast show

organizers were thinking similar thoughts.

27

:

It worked too.

28

:

I had a lovely half an hour with an

industry professional chatting about

29

:

how to build community around podcasts.

30

:

There was also a create a hangout away

from the village in inverted commerce.

31

:

I'm not entirely sure

it was effective though.

32

:

Designating a tiny area for

creators to relax together.

33

:

Didn't entice me in the slightest really?

34

:

If I'm totally honest, it felt

a little bit like a créche.

35

:

Uh, a larger area for independents

to meet and staff to facilitate

36

:

conversations would have been much better.

37

:

I can see what they were

trying to do, but the creator

38

:

village was way more effective.

39

:

I actually met with a few

independent podcasters in the

40

:

meeting gallery, which has separate.

41

:

And by simply bumping

into people on the floor.

42

:

So an area for that wasn't really

necessary, one idea would be to extend

43

:

the creator hangout and physically

move it into the creative village,

44

:

making a creator meeting point

could give it a bit of clarity

45

:

and less of a créche feel.

46

:

So the sessions and talks,

there were so many sessions that

47

:

first day was exhausting because

there was so much to take in.

48

:

And for that, I actually commend the show.

49

:

I think, as a visitor, it's really

important to set your own agenda, to avoid

50

:

being overwhelmed and achieving nothing.

51

:

Uh, the edition of the podcast

show plus is a brilliant idea.

52

:

Uh, knowing that I can stream the audio

for the sessions I wanted to attend,

53

:

but missed is a very good thing.

54

:

Uh, and it meant I could relax more

at the show and not worry if I missed,

55

:

or I got turned away from sessions

56

:

I really wanted to attend.

57

:

If there's one personal

criticism, it's this that don't

58

:

like to criticize too much.

59

:

Um, I searched for any sessions with

the word community in and found one.

60

:

And reading the description of that.

61

:

I discovered it wasn't specifically

about community after all, but

62

:

more about building a show.

63

:

Um, how on earth over two days,

there was not a single session about

64

:

building community around podcasts.

65

:

I don't know.

66

:

For me, community is at the heart of why

I produce podcasts and to not include

67

:

it at all in one of the world's biggest

podcast conferences is utterly baffling.

68

:

Um, speaking of community, uh, one of the

highlights of the show was on the fringe.

69

:

Podcast

70

:

host Captivate, one of the user-facing

companies at the show put on a

71

:

get together at the end of the day

72

:

with tickets allocated on a

first come first serve basis.

73

:

It was lovely spending time

with fellow podcasters and

74

:

reflecting on the show with them.

75

:

Hands up.

76

:

Yes.

77

:

I'm a captivate customer, but

credit where credit's due.

78

:

They're company doing more for that

sense of community than a lot of

79

:

companies in the podcast space.

80

:

Um, another community focused

organization with a presence this

81

:

year was the UK audio network.

82

:

Uh, or you can to be clear this isn't

the music library audio network you

83

:

can is the UK's largest community

of audio producers, commissioners

84

:

and creators, distributing work

opportunities, via a shared email list.

85

:

And their aim is to link

commissioners to talent.

86

:

And give all those working in audio,

an equal chance to pitch for work.

87

:

Their award ceremony

88

:

at the end of day two was a

real highlight and it felt like

89

:

recipients were well-deserving of

the awards and the recognition.

90

:

So is there room for improvement?

91

:

Like I said, it's hard to be

publicly critical for an event like

92

:

this, where it's clear, so much

effort has been poured into it.

93

:

I enjoyed my time there over two

days and feel like I can only

94

:

suggest small improvements from an

independent creator point of view.

95

:

Uh, so my suggestions for improvements

would be to include community

96

:

building as a serious topic next year.

97

:

Uh, extend the creates a

hangout and physically move

98

:

it into the creative village.

99

:

Uh, and make it a creator meeting point.

100

:

Like I said, um, the app was great

for booking meetings, but I think

101

:

the UI could be improved a lot.

102

:

So those are my suggestions

for what they're worth.

103

:

Uh, key takeaway.

104

:

Well, I guess the key takeaway was

that there were a few provisions

105

:

for the Indies, but considering how

many independent podcasts there are

106

:

I'd expect to see more in the way of

engagement on the independent side.

107

:

It's not necessarily the case that

the podcast show London is the

108

:

right arena for that to happen.

109

:

But I can tell that it was really

trying to include us independents.

110

:

And with a few small tweaks

it could really succeed.

111

:

So there we go.

112

:

Those are my thoughts on the

podcast show London:

113

:

What did you think?

114

:

Let me know.

115

:

My links are in the show notes.

116

:

So until next time, take

care and happy podcasting.
