Hi, I'm Christiana Cromer.
2
:I'm a community manager for
Descript and today I'm going to
3
:give you a tip about using video
to promote your audio-only podcast.
4
:So I'm a community manager
at Descript, which is an AI
5
:powered audio and video editor.
6
:So you upload your media and instead
of editing it in a, like a traditional
7
:DAW, or being deep in the tapes,
you can edit it like you would
8
:a Word document or a Notion doc.
9
:So our promise is that if you can edit
a Word doc, you can edit in Descript,
10
:which I love because it's opened up
the doors for more people to become
11
:podcasters and creators or, marketing
people like me who aren't traditional
12
:video editors can work on their
video chops and make some cool stuff.
13
:Earlier this summer, we launched this
thing called Underlord, which is a new AI
14
:editing assistant that lives in Descript.
15
:Don't be scared.
16
:AI is not taking over Descript.
17
:We believe that the creative control
should always be with the creator.
18
:So think of Underlord as a
very smart intern that you
19
:can offload drudgery tasks to.
20
:And also new in the world, especially for
podcasters is what we're calling Rooms.
21
:A year ago, we were lucky enough
to acquire and combine forces
22
:with SquadCast, what we're using
for this podcast right now.
23
:And making good on the promise
to seamlessly add remote
24
:recording into the Descript app,
25
:we're creating Rooms, which is our
new collaborative remote recording
26
:studio that we just opened up the
beta yesterday, which means remote
27
:recording will be right inside your
Descript editor that you know and love.
28
:It's super exciting.
29
:And yeah, I'm excited
for people to try it out.
30
:Like many of us, I got into podcasting
via becoming an avid listener of
31
:podcasts back when I was in school.
32
:I just kind of fell in love
with the format on my frigid
33
:walks to my 8am classes.
34
:Podcast hosts were my best
and motivating friends.
35
:And, as I was just working, you
know, further in my career, I
36
:realised that media is something
I'm super passionate about.
37
:And, I had a mentor who was working
at Descript and a community role
38
:opened up and I wanted that role.
39
:Um, I'd also played around with having
my own little podcast that I was
40
:just tinkering with to see what it
would be like to learn more about it.
41
:So I had some experience
using Descript and just like
42
:learning more about the space.
43
:But my true foray started when
I got the job at Descript.
44
:I've been here for three years, three
years working in the industry, and
45
:it's a pretty amazing space to work in.
46
:There's a million things to love about
podcasting, but what came to me as I
47
:was thinking about this was the long or
longer form format where you can be on a
48
:walk, or you can be doing the dishes, or
you can be sitting in your room quietly,
49
:whatever you want to do feels like such a
balm for the type of content that we get
50
:served on our social platforms, right?
51
:When I get to the part of my day
where I'm listening to my podcasts
52
:feel so It's like a warm blanket.
53
:Um, unless I'm listening to some like
news podcast, of course, but then I'm
54
:anxious or true crime or whatever I
know that like, there's the podcasting
55
:bubble and people were always worried
about, you know, what's going on with the
56
:industry, but I actually think that the
long game, there's going to be more and
57
:more audio content because we're tired.
58
:We're tired of looking at our phones
and ingesting 1 million pieces of micro
59
:content a day, and it just feels like
a format and a medium that is like,
60
:good for the soul not to be too, um,
philosophical about it or whatever, but
61
:I just, it feels different than other
ways of consuming content right now.
62
:It feels better for my brain.
63
:And it's more of a connective medium.
64
:I feel close to some of these hosts
and the creators that I listen to
65
:versus oftentimes I'm like, what was
that one TikTok, that one person?
66
:It was so funny.
67
:I have no idea who they were, right?
68
:So I'm not hating on all that stuff.
69
:I think creators that do
that work are also awesome.
70
:And there's a lot of cool stuff
that happens on social right
71
:now, but, podcasts are just...
72
:they just feel good.
73
:They make me feel good.
74
:So my big tip, here it
is: always record video,
75
:even if you make an audio only podcast.
76
:You can use that long form video
recording for social clips and promotion,
77
:sending assets to your guests that
there'll be more willing to share.
78
:I mean, everyone loves to see
themselves rendered on screen.
79
:And creating highlight reels for your
website to share with prospective guests.
80
:And of course, as like roundups for
your season, say you want to do a
81
:collection of all the people you
had on video is a really cool way
82
:to like showcase your guests and
showcase the work that you're doing.
83
:Stuff like that.
84
:So just to be very clear, I am not saying
you have to have a full video podcast.
85
:I think thought leaders in our
space that say you need to have
86
:full video podcasts are wrong.
87
:I don't think that's true for everybody.
88
:You know your audience and your craft
the best, maybe the type of show you do
89
:lends itself to the audio-only experience.
90
:I think that's awesome,
91
:and I don't think that
you should change that.
92
:But to me, it is 100 percent
worth it to record video at this
93
:point for promotional purposes.
94
:And that's my big tip.
95
:you can find me on LinkedIn.
96
:Just search Christiana Cromer
also on Twitter and Instagram or
97
:at descript.com/community, if you
want to keep up with the stuff
98
:we're doing over at Descript.
99

links in the show notes.
